DAN LEE AT MERIDIAN PUBLIC
LIBRARY TEACHING THE SCIENCE
IN SCIENCE-FICTION
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, so I am well acquainted with earthquakes. I grew up in
the San Fernando Valley where my mother worked for a division of North American Aviation called
Rocketdyne, the company that built the Saturn 5 main engines that launched men to the Moon. It was also
the primary contractor for the space shuttle program and built the main engines for that as well.
I had an opportunity to see a live test firing of an F-1 engine, from several miles distant, in early 1960.
This experience left an indelible mark on my childhood. Since then I have had a life long fascination with
manned space flight and astronomy.
I moved to Mississippi in 1991 and settled in the Meridian area. I attended Mississippi State University
and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in education.
For the past year I have been 'somewhat' retired and 'trying' to write full time. I have written a science
fiction novel titled "Starling's Flight" for which I am currently in the process of looking for an agent. I have
also done a short story called "Falling Day" which is currently under submission to Writer's Digest Annual
Competition. I am presently working on a short story called "Starling's Race" for submission to the L. Ron
Hubbard Writers of The Future Contest.
I joined the Mississippi Writers Guild at it's inception and volunteered to serve on the Board of Directors. I
have been assigned the title of Technical Director, whatever that means! As a member of the Guilds
presentation of Honoring Historic Mississippi Writers I have had the privilege of portraying Tennessee
Williams.
Anyone interested in doing an evening of astronomy observing please don't hesitate to send me an
email. I have binoculars and telescopes as well as an excellent observing site. dclee1@starband.net
